Gladiator

The movie is the story of Maximus (Crowe), a general who leads the Roman army to victory over Germania in the beginning of the movie. When Marcus Aurelius, the current Emperor asks him to serve his country even further, Maximus is torn between Love of Country, and Love of Family. Commodus; Marcus Aurelius’ Son, assumes he would be the next Emperor. When he finds his Fathers plan would be to have Maximus Heir to Romes future, He Shows his own true allegiance is to himself. He Kills his own Father, then makes it known to Maximus, his intention to have The Generals Family killed as well as having him executed.

Russell Crowe does an excellent job in his portrayal of Maximus, a man cut down from a general to a slave, and then became more powerful than the emperor, exactly as the tag-line says. His despair over the death of his family and the future he’s denied, his disgust over the games, and his quest for vengeance when he finds the man who killed his family and his close friend. Joaquin Phoenix also does a marvelous job for Commodus. Successfully showing him as a spoiled rich boy lusting for more power, and viewing his as someone not to be feared, but pitied. The good thing is that `Gladiator’ balances out drama with gruesome battles. There is enough blood here to please all `bloodsporting actioners’ yet plenty of drama to enlighten the `cinematic elite’. So overall, Gladiator was well deserving of its Best Picture Academy Award.

Green Mile

The film, based on a novel by Stephen King, contains such a variety of emotional events that it repels its audience away from its subject rather than glamorizing it. Only a handful of recent productions have been capable of such power. “The Green Mile” is truly one of the best films this year and is Oscar Worthy in many categories. It is a unique, three hour experience that must be seen to believe. Staring Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan, “The Green Mile” is the story of a prison during the depression. In charge of the Electric Chair, Paul Edgecomb (Hanks) and his group of guards, run a tight operation where often the guards have a close relationship with their prisoners. One day a prisoner is sent to them in the form of the gigantic John Coffey (Clarke Duncan). Coffey is sentenced to death for the brutal murder of two young girls, but as the guards begin to interact with Coffey, they begin to realise he isn’t quite what he seems. “The Green Mile” is a brilliant film. It’s perhaps slightly too long, running in at a hefty three hours, but the majority of it runs smoothly and effectively. It might not be as good as films like “The Godfather” (1972) or “Casablanca” (1942), but it’s definately a film which everyone should watch. It’s a film which inspires us to think, and simultaneously causes us to shed a tear.

Brave heart

Set in the late 13th century, ‘Braveheart’ is the story of one of Scotland’s greatest national heroes Sir William Wallace. leader of the Scottish resistance forces during the first years of the long, ultimately successful struggle to free Scotland from English rule. Mel Gibson is an accomplished actor, with films like “Mad Max” and “Lethal Weapon” under his belt. “Ransom” showed he was more than just a quirky role actor, but it was “Braveheart” that proved to everyone that he was a great actor… and director. Mel Gibson plays William Wallace, a well-educated Scottish peasant who is determined to lead a peaceful life. Well, if you’ve seen the poster for this film, you probably already know that he doesn’t succeed. When a law is put into place that says English noblemen have first right to lay with Scottish brides, Wallace marries in secret. But, when it is found out, a local noble attempts to take Murron, Wallace’s wife, she resists, leading to a gruesome execution. With little choice, Wallace opts for vengeance, and thus begins the journey of Scotland’s greatest warrior. Mel Gibson, in his finest hour, brings this true story to life in one of the greatest films of the 90’s. If you are looking for the perfect blend of powerful acting, superb directing, a great story line, intrigue, drama, romance and action then rent Braveheart. It is perhaps the greatest movie on war and liberation ever made. This is a truly inspiring film, perhaps not entirely nor anywhere near historically accurate, but in terms of large scale entertainment and the realisation of a vision in cinema it is a great achievement, right up there with Spartacus and Ben Hur, and well worthy of the recognition it received.

The Prestige

“The Prestige” is based on a book, of the same title, that was written by Christopher Priest. The story is about two magicians who have been rivals to each other ever since the day they met and throughout the course of time, each of them tries to gain an advantage over the other. Eventually the friendly rivalry becomes an obsession. Their obsessions over trying to discover how the other does the trick, or how to upstage that trick, could turn into something that would kill one another. Besides all of the various twists, the acting was also fantastic. Hugh Jackman was a big surprise success as Rupert Angier. Christian Bale is always good and the trend continued as Alfred Borden. Michael Cane as always was great as Cutter. Scarlett Johansson was also very good as Olivia Wenscombe. Even David Bowie and Andy Serkis popped up as Nikola Tesla and Alley. Ultimately, it’s a film that could be about everything or about absolutely nothing, one that is either led entirely by plot contrivances or one where the themes and storytelling dictate the characters’ actions far more than credibility, and where the biggest trick is that ultimately there is no trick. All interpretations seem equally valid, which is part of the fun. And best

of all it’s a delight to watch.

Requiem for a Dream

The film has so accurately portrayed the craving and depravity of a person dealing withaddiction. It is a beautifully articulated piece of artwork, intricately presented on a silver platter. Director Darren Aronofsky shines in his brilliant direction and style, in this depiction of the downward spiral of the lives of four people, living with their respective addictions. It really accomplishes what it sets out to do, which is to disturb us with the downward spiral of drug addiction. Don’t let that put you off though, as this film possesses outstanding acting, impeccable writing and direction(despite one minor detail fault), a very powerful score and gorgeous cinematography. Though at times the imagery is gruesome, this only amplifies the pervasive motif of desperation. In my opinion, it should be required viewing for all high school drug prevention programs. A word of warning about this film is that it is not for the faint-hearted, having some graphic scenes and this movie is a very depressing experience, don’t expect an uplifting experience.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is a bizarre but wonderful movie, a very strange and remarkably tender experience. “Eternal Sunshine” centres around the life of Joel (Jim Carrey) a shy, mild mannered man who is heart broken after splitting from his feisty, impulsive girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet). A short while after their split, he meets her again while she is working at a library and he is stunned to discover that she doesn’t recognise him. He later finds out that the reason for this is that Clementine has had her memory of Joel wiped out completely. Dr Howard Mierwick (Tom Wilkinson) has performed an operation on her brain after Clementine visited his clinic to forget Joel. Much to Joel’s distress, he decides to do the same, but during his operation he revisits memories of Clementine that he struggles to let go of.

Carrey and Winslet both turn in superb performances, as do the supporting cast. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a brilliant work of originality.

Wall-E

The world Pixar creates is so credible, you forget it is animation. Thumbs up for Wall-E as well, he is such a cute and adorable character, you will fall in love with him immediately. The story is brilliant. WALL-E is such a lovable character. I’ve never felt so much emotion for one character. There are many little things in the film that have so much meaning to them. There are things that will be nostalgic to older viewers, and things that younger viewers will love to look at. It is beautiful and it is heartbreaking. It is funny and it is also a tad scary. It has two supposedly life-less robots teaching humanity the very meaning of being human, as well as learning the meaning of true love themselves However, it does steer for the cheesy, cliché aspects of a child’s film, yet still remaining a completely G-rated film. WALL-E, Pixar’s latest film, is about a robot named WALL-E (or ‘Waste Allocation Load Lifter, Earth-Class’), who is the only thing left on earth with some sort of emotion. He meets another robot named EVE, and the trip begins. Director Andrew Stanton and everyone at Pixar deserve huge credit for this movie.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

A Terminator(Arnold Schwarzenegger) was sent from the future to kill the unborn son of Sarah Connor(Linda Hamilton) in the original. Another cyborg named ‘T-1000′ (Robert Patrick) made up of liquid metal and more powerful than the last is sent back in time to assassinate John Connor . The Human Resistance responds by sending a Terminator (Arnold Scwarzeneggar) back in time to protect John . The stage is set for showdown.

Schwarzeneggar is great as the poker-faced saviour cyborg . Edward Furlong makes a sparkling debut . Watch out for the buddy bonding between him and Schwarzeneggar…they are funny . Robert Patrick as T-1000 is scary as hell and has almost no lines to deliver. Edward Furlong deserves the “Christian Bale Child Actor of the Year” award. His portrayal of John Connor is vulnerable, intelligent and lovable. Linda Hamilton becomes her character utterly, body and soul.

Overall, Termiantor II: Judgement Day is an absolute must see classic. James Cameron and his team have given us a classic that has something for everyone.

The Silence of the Lamb

This movie deals with a young FBI cadet(Jodie Foster) who is sent to interview a captured psychopath(Anthony Hopkins) to find out more about a serial killer (Ted Levine). Hopkins is a former doctor of Levine and holds the clues to capturing the unknown criminal. Needless to say the film takes many twists and turns, creating a suspenseful thriller that has no equal. At the heart of “The Silence of the Lambs” are the confrontations between Hopkins and Foster. This movie is not for the squeamish with those and other scenes involving the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins). Jodie Foster is excellent as the FBI agent “Clarice Starling”. A major part of the film is psychological more than violent as Lecter constantly taunts “Clarice,” while she tries her best to manipulate him to help with a case. The by-play between the two is a game in itself.

The fact that this movie won all five of the major academy Awards speaks for itself. Taut direction and a superb screenplay might be the best arguments for the film’s power.
